Lai Hua Fai - Festival of Lights

Early in October, Luang Prabang celebrated the beautiful Festival of Lights.

Every temple in Luang Prabang was decorated with paper lanterns and bamboo boats handmade by the novices and monks. The volunteers were able to join the novices and monks from one temple to experience the process of making the paper star lanterns.

On the night of the festival, the town came alive by candle light and fire works. A parade of highly decorated boats constructed from bamboo and paper were paraded down the main street to be taken to the grounds of one of the most beautiful temples in Luang Prabang – Wat Xieng Thong. From there, people made their way down to the Mekong River to place their own boats of banana leaves, flowers, incense and candles onto the river with prayers of blessing for the future and in remembrance of ancestors.
