Lao New Year

I think most people would agree with me when I say that under normal circumstances at home, if you were walking down the street, minding your own business, and someone hurled a bucket or water at you, or chased you down the street with a running hose, you'd be a bit miffed...to put it nicely. But here in Luang Prabang we're all becoming very used to being doused with cold water, because this week is Pii Mai...or Lao New Year...and one of the traditions of this very important time of year is to throw water at each other! The water is thrown to wish good luck in the new year, and to symbolise the impending rainy season, and is great fun for the kids and adults alike...and given the steamy heat here at the moment, it's a nice way to cool down!

Pii Mai officially starts on the 14th of April, with a big procession in Luang Prabang, town-wide celebrations, and the annual crowning of the 'most beautiful girl in Luang Prabang'. I'll post some photos from the celebrations once they start in earnest, so keep an eye on the blog.

Right then...where's my water pistol??
